Studied at the Prague Conservatory, then with Professor Bozo Paradzik at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. As an eighteen-year-old, he was engaged for one season by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, then became a member of the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, and in 2009 was granted a scholarship by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
Since January 2010, he has been engaged by the Staatskapelle Dresden. In 2006 he won first prize in the F. Simandel International Double-bass Competition, followed in 2009 by second prize from the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan. Petr Popelka is also active as a composer.
He has presented his output internationally, e.g. in Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Japan.
