Franz Schubert: Quintet for 2 Violin, Viola and 2 Cello in C major, D 956
Aron Quartett, Jiří Bárta – cello
The festival will be topped off in a symbolic manner, by the last opus of Franz Schubert (1797-1828), the father of German lieder, a genius composer of piano and chamber music, and a symphonist whose import was fully appreciated only posthumously. Schubert finished his last chamber composition, the Quintet for Two Violins, Viola and Two Cellos in C major, only two months before his precocious death. The work, today regarded as a genuine masterpiece of chamber music, had to wait twenty-five years for publication, and it took almost as long until it was taken up by performers.
Its unorthodox instrumentation (two violas would have seemed to offer themselves more readily than the two cellos here) gives to the work a rich, deep register and defines it in terms of two distinctly hued blocs. The first cello assumes the role of first violin.
The quintet brings to its peak Schubert´s mastery of form and intricate harmonies. It is characterized by frequent and sudden alternations of restless and wild music with lyrical passages conjuring up melodies that can be described without much exaggeration as “divine” or “otherworldly”.
